Anti-bully bill battle widening

WINNIPEG—More religious leaders are joining opposition to Manitoba’s proposed anti-bullying law.
Some leaders in the Sikh, Muslim, Jewish, and Coptic communities have written to Premier Greg Selinger to say the bill infringes on religious freedom.

Ismael Mukhtar, president of the Manitoba Islamic Association, said faith-based schools should not be forced to act against their beliefs.
The anti-bullying bill would require schools to allow gay-straight alliance groups if students wished to establish them.
The NDP government has said the a law would help promote equality among students.
The letters from religious leaders were released to the media by Conservative MP Rod Bruinooge.
