Replica firearm sparks lockdown

The Rainy River District OPP responded to the scene of a lockdown at the Fort Frances High School just before noon today.
Police had received a report from school officials that a 16-year-old male was seen at the school with what was suspected to be a replica firearm.

The high school was placed into a security lockdown at 11:50 a.m. by school officials and police arrived on the scene within minutes of the receiving the call to ensure public safety.
The school remained safe and secure in a lockdown situation, with officers on-site as the investigation continued.
Around 12:47 p.m., the OPP located the male off school premises and confirmed he did have a replica handgun in his possession.
The male was taken into custody pending further investigation with the assistance of the Fort Frances Crime Unit
Once the male was in custody, the lockdown was lifted and classes resumed.
Police worked in consultation with the school board as administrators informed students and their families of the incident.
Parents are encouraged to speak with their children about the incident, and contact school administration is they feel additional support is required.
