Lakers drop season-opener

The Fort Frances Lakers began their 2012/13 SIJHL regular-season schedule on a sour note last night in Hoyt Lakes, Mn., falling 3-2 to the Minnesota Iron Rangers.
First-year forward Kevin Kurm opened the scoring for the Lakers on the power play two-and-a-half minutes into the contest.

But the host Iron Rangers knotted the score midway through the second frame when Jay Routheau’s shot beat Lakers’ goalie Tanner Hamilton.
The home side then netted a pair of third-period goals to move ahead 3-1.
Riley Daly gave the Iron Rangers the lead a minute-and-a-half into the frame, with Jonathon Losurdo extending the cushion on the power play a few minutes later.
Lakers’ defenceman Owen Stauber put his team back within a goal with 64 seconds left in regulation time, but the visitors were unable to notch the equalizer in the dying seconds.
The Lakers will look to nab their first win of the season here tomorrow night when they host the Minnesota Wilderness at 7:30 p.m. at the ’52 Canadians Arena.
