Mill shutdown extended
Monday, 19 December 2011 - 2:26pm
But on Friday, Seth Kursman, vice-president, corporate communications, sustainability and government affairs, confirmed not only will the kraft mill be shut down at Christmas, but both kraft and paper-making operations will be halted until the end of the January or when market conditions improve.
“Due to the pulp market conditions, the Fort Frances [kraft] mill will go down at Christmas as originally planned but will restart only at the end of January, assuming market conditions have improved,” Kursman said in an e-mail.
“We already had one paper machine down for market curtailment and with the kraft mill down, it doesn’t make sense financially to keep the other paper machine running,” he added.
“Over 300 employees will be impacted as we will be running with skeleton crews during this period,” Kursman noted.
“Employees will be allowed to schedule vacation, which reduces in many cases the personal impact.”
This temporary downtime impacts approximately 6,000 metric tons of pulp production and 19,000 metric tons of paper production.

Resolute Forest Products will be shutting down the kraft mill and both paper machines at its Fort Frances operation until the end of January or when market conditions improve, a company spokesperson reported Friday.
The company had announced in late November that it would be curtailing its paper-making operations at the local mill for the final five weeks of 2011 due to poor market conditions.

As Mr Hampton predicted.
As Mr Hampton predicted. This Company is not a Community based employer,They have led us down the garden path. Shame on our council for not seeing the future. This company has only one agenda. Close the mill period. The Quebec Gov. will see that they can exist there only. Why can they buy Quebec mills and ours close .????? Fort Frances Council wakeup. Ontario wakeup.
What is the town council
What is the town council supposed to do about this? Don't just throw insults out there with no logic or solution. Council can only help promote business in our town through incentives, they can't affect the operations of the mill.
I personally hope that the mine does open in Barwick and all of the people who work in our mill apply for those jobs and tell Resolute to shove it.
MILL SHUTDOWN EXTENDED
At a time when statistics are saying that computers have not reduced the need for paper why can this company not keep it together. We need someone to take over this Mill that knows how to run a business. I certainly hope there are no bonuses forthcoming next year for upper management! Merry Christmas!
mill shutdown
I'm sorry to say, but this could be the begining of the end. I've heard the mill will shut down permanently within two years.
Shut down in 2 years? its
Shut down in 2 years? its done right now!!! youll see~!
Rant
Unless you can site where you get your doom and gloom rant from and are 100% sure you are speaking the truth I would suggest that you keep quiet, no one appreciates you comments at a time when people are worried enough!
we are just being honest,
we are just being honest, these mill companies are ruthless, and just see what is happening all over the world with them shutting them down one by one, time for a reality check ppl, the Gravy Train has left fort frances!!
Gee how quickly things
Gee how quickly things change. It was only a few months ago that I heard an employee bragging about their new position and how much money he was making on 1/2 hour weekend calls ins to change a hose and being paid 4 hours at time and one half. Then there are the people at the top that make more in salary and bonuses than this one mill has probably ever made
Face it the future of the mill is dim and most will be lucky to retire with their pensions
It was not 6 months ago that some mill execs were overheard at dinner saying the whole thing will be done within 4 years-completely.
For all the breaks and accomodations town council has given the mill don't count on it being a long term rate payer. This will only result in bigger town deficits and higher taxes for residential owners to continue to operate this town. Council must ask themselves how people can afford to pay more when many people are not getting a raise, some are taking cuts and many are barely getting by on part time jobs with no benefits. It is time for a huge realitiy check. the gravy train of the past has pulled out of town never to return and everyone better make some adjustments.
Just think, the Mill
Just think, the Mill property could replace the Nelson street park and they could finally have the "Mill in the Park" that they always dreamed of.
I can picture a beautiful
I can picture a beautiful town in ten years when the mill is tore down and the waterfront is reclaimed the smell is gone other potiocial employers move into area who finally dont have to compete against a giant. If other employers come they will be located away from town ,creating a cleaner town. We are a or could be a major border crossing town with potincial in that area. Yes it looks blik in short term but can be very good down the road. The natural resourses will not leave with the mill and will be needed,so we can restructure in a way that is updated from the 100 year old modle. This is from someone who makes his living from the mill being open
