Rainy River lands waterfront funds

Funding to help the town of Rainy River develop a comprehensive waterfront plan is coming down the pipeline from the province.
The funding, which aims to “identify new economic development opportunities for the community,” according to the province’s July 8 announcement, will see a total of $18,900 put towards this project as part of the Infrastructure and Community Development Program through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp.

“We’re happy to have received it because with our strategic planning, it all meshes together,” said Rainy River Mayor Debbie Ewald.
“We’re trying to move the town forward and this is another opportunity to do that,” she added.
The plan will have the town identify services and facilities “required to market the community as a tourism destination, attract new business and industry, as well as new professionals,” according to the province’s release.
“It’s just like to do a feasibility study, marketing study about enhancing the waterfront more,” explained Mayor Ewald. “We haven’t really done a lot with the waterfront since we put in Hannam Park.
“So that’s just basically what it’s for.”
While the town hopes to move forward with this project as soon as possible, Mayor Ewald noted many of the details still are being finalized.
