Forest fires being watched
| By editorial Tuesday, 22 July 2008 - 2:44pm. |
There currently are seven active fires in the West Fire Region.
Five of those are being managed to realize ecological benefits associated with forest fires as per Ontario’s Forest Fire Management Strategy.
The two other blazes—Sioux Lookout Fire #18 and Sioux Lookout Fire #19—are receiving direct suppression action by MNR FireRangers.
The forest fire hazard currently is “low” to “moderate.” However, the forecast of warm, dry, and sunny weather is expected to result in a rapid increase in the hazard.
Use caution with all outdoor fires.
Under the Forest Fires Prevention Act of Ontario, day burning of brush or grass is not allowed.
Burning of brush or grass should be done no sooner than two hours before sunset and it must be put it out no later than two hours after sunrise.
Choose a safe site, keep your fire small, and never leave it unattended. Remember to ensure the fire is put dead out before leaving the site.
If you live in a municipality, check local bylaws for any burning restrictions that may apply.
